Last Saturday morning, community volunteers removed
65 bags of trash, 20 hypodermic-needles, and 9 knives from the streets of West Oakland.
While the rest are giving 90-second sound bites at public forums, we are out there
in Oakland’s neighborhoods doing the things that the City Council
hasn’t done.
This weekend’s community clean-up presents a greater challenge; We’re taking our Believe in Oakland message to Oakland’s forgotten neighborhood, Sobrante Park.
I need you, and your belief in Oakland to join me this
Saturday in cleaning up East Oakland. In the aftermath
of 80 police lay-offs, a “sell this, sell that” budget, and another weekend of gun-violence, I want to show people that this stuff matters.
The City Council doesn’t believe that keeping the streets clean and giving
people a sense of well-being in their community matters. If you don’t have clean streets then you can’t get anyone to believe that you can do anything else.
So please join me in Sobrante Park on Saturday, 24 July 2010, at 10am. We’re meeting at the School of Urban Missions, 735 105th Avenue, Oakland, CA. It will be the campaign’s third of eight clean-ups, taking place every Saturday this summer.
